Auckland Anniversary Regatta 2024

Published Tue 30 Jan 2024

After a hiatus since 2021 due to the challenges posed by COVID-19 and the Auckland floods, the Auckland Dragon Boat Association (ADBA) successfully organized the Auckland Anniversary Dragon Boat Regatta in grand style. On Monday, 29th January, 43 dragon boat crews came together at the stunning Auckland Viaduct to compete in a series of standard and small boat races as part of the much-anticipated Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta.

Despite the initial gloom with rain clouds covering the sky, the day unfolded into a spectacular showcase of dragon boat racing. The wind posed a challenge for the competing sweeps at the start line, yet they navigated their way through the 200m race course with determination and skill. The Auckland Viaduct, surrounded by super yachts and charters, provided a unique backdrop to the races, creating a memorable experience for both participants and spectators.

Clubs from the Bay of Plenty, Taranaki, and the Waikato joined Auckland crews for a fun-filled day of 200m races, bringing a sense of camaraderie and friendly competition to the event. Despite the disruptions caused by weather conditions, 39 races were completed, and smiles were far and wide as paddlers and the passing public enjoyed a fantastic day on the water.

The Auckland Dragon Boat Association extends heartfelt congratulations to all participating teams for their outstanding efforts, and a special acknowledgment to the winning teams for their remarkable achievements. Competition times and finals results can be found here.

Holly Claeys, ADBA Events Manager, expressed her enthusiasm, saying, "This event is a favorite for many of our paddlers. It's a fun day on the water and a great way for us to showcase our growing sport in our beautiful city." Teams are now eagerly anticipating the Auckland Regional Championships scheduled to take place at Lake Pupuke on Saturday, 23rd March.

The Auckland Dragon Boat Association acknowledges and appreciates the invaluable contribution of our dedicated volunteers. These events could not happen without their tireless efforts and commitment to ensuring the smooth execution of every detail.

The association looks forward to building on the success of this regatta and continuing to promote the vibrant sport of dragon boat racing in the Auckland region.
